Reading Rulers Helping Children With Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a multi-faceted learning disability affecting reading, writing, handwriting, memory, and/or organisational skills. Many children with the correct instruction from experienced teachers and tutors can be helped to either overcome their dyslexia or develop coping mechanisms to be able to work around their dyslexia.

Some children have tremendous difficulties with reading and as their parents hear and watch them read sometimes they wonder if their child is reading the page at all or if they're just making the words up. At other times words are left out, read backwards or muddled up and even chunks or sounds from other words are read in place of the correct word. It can be very frustrating and emotionally draining for parents (and children) to see their children struggle so much.

Children who show these types of reading problems could be suffering from Visual Stress. Other symptoms including the above are, headaches, feeling sick, eye pains, blurred text, moving text, moving the book to the side to read so they can read out of the corners of their eyes and holding the book really close whilst reading. From my own experience I used to feel sick whilst reading and understandably hated reading for many years.

You can find out if you child is suffering from Visual Stress by using a very simple and cost effective set of reading rulers. They're a useful device to alter the contrast of the black on white text used in the majority of books and texts. Coloured overlay reading rulers are about the size of a 6 inch ruler and come in a variety of colours. You simply lay a ruler over the text and ask your child to read. You can test all the different colours to determine which colour works best. Your child will know immediately if it has worked because their symptoms will stop.

Reading Rulers aren't a cure for dyslexia - they are a big help for children and adults who suffer from Visual Stress.
