Top 3 Yoga Books For Kids
1. Yoga For Children - by Mary Stewart and Kathy Phillips - Published by Simon & Schuster Inc 1992 - ISBN 0-671-78712-8
This is a lovely colourful book. It gives you a broad introduction into yoga for children; it covers the benefits, history of yoga, principles and how to practice. The book is dotted with accurate photographs of children practicing the different poses. The poses are clearly written and give enough detailed information to enable you to understand and teach the pose. The book offers a very good description of the Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar). Yoga breathing exercises, yoga games are also covered in this book.
Yoga is particularly suitable for children with special needs. The book has a whole section devoted to children with special needs and shows you how to safely adapt poses to suit children who are wheelchair bound - yoga exercises they can do seated in their wheelchair or laying on the floor.
2. Imagine That! A Child's Guide To Yoga - by Kenneth K. Cohen/Joan Hyme - Published by Integral Yoga, 2003 - ISBN 0-932040-40-3
You will love the illustrations and imagery used throughout this book. It is beautifully illustrated. The benefits, variations, suggestions for use are included in the easy to read instructions. Each pose comes complete with a related poem/affirmation which adds a little sparkle and help you gain a deeper understanding of spiritual benefits of the pose - e.g. The Shoulder Stand Pose - in the book referred to a The Candle Pose, p.26 - the related poem reads "Like a Candle I will burn, To give the darkness light, In happiness and health I know The world becomes so bright".
Imagine That! also has suitable yoga breathing exercises for children and a guided meditation, Inner Space, which you can read to your child.
3. Yoga Games For Children - by Danielle Bersma & Marjoke Visscher - Published by Hunter House Inc., Publishers, 2003 - ISBN 0-89793-389-3
An excellent book. You will love the range of physical activities and yoga games presented. Individual yoga poses are presented as well as yoga games and classroom topic activities. Clearly written and easy to follow instructions, the yoga games/poses can be used by children aged 3 upwards. The book covers partner and group games, as well as yoga games you could use for special occasions, e.g. a school project on jealousy, friendship, inner beauty, grief and loss.
This is one of my favourite yoga kids' books and I highly recommended for use in schools or youth and community projects.
So, to conclude part 2 of this 3 part mini-series, there are lots of good yoga books for kids available in book stores. The above are the ones I personally enjoy using. If you are interested in teaching yoga to kids, take your time, have a good browse on the internet or your local book store and choose a book which feels right for you and or child.
