A lot of websites and companies are offering reading speed tests that give you an analysis table and a set of questions. The most common test is composed of an essay which you are asked to read. Your time is determined by a timer which you are asked to press before you start and when you finish. After that, you are given an analysis table that details your performance and gives comments on its effect on your life with respect to speed. For example, this analysis chart may state that if you have a speed below 200 words per minute, then, you are below average and may be missing a lot of information necessary for your age. Then, you are given a set of questions about the text to determine your comprehension level.
Another form of reading speed test is through a countdown timer which is set to 1 minute or more depending on the proctor wherein you are given an essay which you are asked to read within the allotted time. Once the countdown timer goes off, you are asked to stop, finished or unfinished. Your reading speed is based on the number of words you have read during the time period allotted. Like the previous reading speed test, you are also given an analysis chart that details your performance.
Cost
These reading speed tests may be given for free. However, some establishments require you to pay a processing fee of a few dollars for your test. Some are given to you personally while some are completed through the internet.
It is important to take note that these establishments have varying analysis charts. Some may rate a speed of 200 words per minute as below average while some consider a speed of 150 words per minute and below as the indicator that you are below par. Thus, it is more economical and a lot easier to just do a reading speed test on your own. Give your own analysis of your reading speed based on the goal you have set for yourself. Also, by doing a test on your own, you can choose the reading material you want to use.
